Take that spammers!

Poker Sites under Blogger Attack
Oh those poor blog spammers! Now their online poker spam won’t get them the best ranking, and people won’t be hitting my site when looking for online poker. Instead, bloggers are taking back their space by putting links to wikipedia, the online encylopedia editable by the world essentially, and more specifically links to the online poker definition on wikipedia.
I’m not going to put links to wikipedia, merely because it would seem to indicate that the blog spammers are winning… blog and comment spam are the bane of bloggers’ existence. Hundreds of posts come in every day, driven by “bots” that add comments, trackbacks, and referer spam. The idea is that searches for any of the spammed comments will raise the link value of a site. So if my blog is spammed, and Jake’s is spammed (he’s at http://utterlyboring.com) and three or four thousand all have the same links then that raises the ranking over on Google
and you will end up playing online poker at the Texas Holdem site… or looking for inappropriate photos of grannies – eeeew!
Wordpress has whole forums dedicated to fighting all of these types of spam including plugins that tarpit, or slow down posting for specific users, spam whacking in the form of the spamminator plugin that prevents posting and deletes the spam so I don’t have to. There is also the plugin that closes comments after a certain number of days – for me it’s set to 21 – it’s automatic and helps to slow down some of the flood.
So while bloggers are not to be considered real journalists at least we won’t have to be a source of spam links. :)
