Switched to Cable

Filed under: Geek News and Stuff — site admin @ 8:38 am

The switch is done. We have cable internet, phone and tv. I would have been happy with just the phone and internet, but my wife insisted on tv too since it’s not that much more than just the phone and internet.
Observations so far:
I still see reruns even though the channels I’m seeing shows on reruns I’ve only had for about three weeks.
I had to fight with the cable modem to get onto the internet. I guess having ancient 10baseT NICs in the firewall don’t talk to the modem so well. Adding a four port Linksys 10/100 hub between the modem and the firewall fixed the connection. I might have to think about upgrading the network to gigabit and adding at least 100baseT cards to the firewall. The internet is much faster than it used to be.
I don’t like using the cable provider’s DNS servers. I’ll keep using my own, thanks.

Look Dark, Go to Jail

Filed under: Politics — site admin @ 7:31 am

Arizona as proven a dozen times over that the state legislature is overwhelmingly stupid. This state proclaims to be “conservative” and one of the pillars of “conservative” is that the state stays out of peoples lives. Jan Brewer has a bill that she claims she is reading that will require, require law enforcement to question your immigration legal status. The proponents are saying that simply providing an Arizona driver’s license is enough to prove you are here legally, but just yesterday a truck driver, who provided his Arizona CDL driver’s license upon request was handcuffed and detained until his wife, who had to leave work, could provide his birth certificate to ICE.

This new law also allows citizens to sue law enforcement and the government for not demanding “papers please” when they encounter someone. Next time I am stopped – and I am pretty obviously white – I expect, nay demand, to be asked for my legal status, I could be here illegally you know. The only exempt group should be Native Americans, they were here first. And FSM forbid my half Panamanian daughter walk home from school.

Let’s practice it all together, “papers please”. I thought Soviet Russia was gone.
