What the f*&k is wrong with cyrus-imapd?

Filed under: Geek News and Stuff — site admin @ 6:18 pm

Maybe this should have been titled what the hell was the Fedora team thinking?
As you may or may not know, I was planning on upgrading this server from a puny IBM Aptiva 166 to a newer white box Celeron 400. I installed Fedora Core 3 on it. The whole “slim” 595mb of it. And then installed sendmail, apache, all the php stuff, mysql, spamassassin, clamav-milter, etc. Then came the part that is driving me nuts. I had to install an imap server- you know so that I can check my email.
I don’t know who decided that the cyrus-imapd package was “better” than UW-Imap. Whoever it was didn’t ask me about it. I resisted moving to cyrus-imapd when I slowly brought the old Aptiva up to almost a modern install. I fought with logins and authentications and then forced UW-Imap on it and all was good. I could get my email and so could the rest of my family and my business partners. (more…)

rm -rf ./*

Filed under: Geek News and Stuff — site admin @ 12:54 pm

Anyone who is a geek has run this powerful and dangerous command on the wrong file system- that is if you run a real operating system such and Linux/BSD, or one of its power house brethren.
This time it was my turn. I’m getting this server ready to be replaced. In the process, I’m mapping the disk partitions, writing down the mount points, etc. something that really should have been done when I set it up. I’m pretty sure that I did, but who knows where I placed the documentation? One of my partitions seemed to be a backup… I didn’t remember it being a backup as such, but that’s what it looked like. So I proceeded to run rm -rf ./* on that partition- temporarily mounted on /mnt/temp1. Too late, I thought, let me look one more time… sure enough it was also mounted on /usr and by the time I noticed /usr/bin was gone. Luckily, no data is lost, it’s just a matter of putting the new machine into place- and pretty soon too. Don’t be surprised when the machine is down for a couple of hours on 13/02/2005.

Remember don’t recklessly run rm -rf * as root and always document your systems.

Install Fest schedule- moving right along

Filed under: Geek News and Stuff — site admin @ 7:40 am

The Install Fest scheduled for this Saturday Feb 05, 2005 is coming together well. The USGS has not only generously offered use of their space, but has also offered to have demo machines with several different popular distributions running to give users a chance to figure out which they like and have that one installed on their computer.

A “simple” demo of the K12LTSP distro will also be set up showing the power of running Linux from a Terminal Server/thin client. Anyone who might be joining us from the public schools should be very interested in seeing this distribution in action.

There is at least one scheduled talk by Brock: Linux, kernel to desktop.

I can help demo the K12LTSP distro by pulling the side panel from the worstation computer- or at the very least the network cable- and showing the workstation machine boot directly to the desktop without a hard drive.

Other proposed talks include security basics, internet and web(apache?) basics- as requested and expertise is available.

Flyers have been distributed to local computer stores, NAU, some of the local public schools, within the Coconino County IT department and at a few different work places around town.

REMINDER: If you have recommended this InstallFest to people you know who will want to dual boot Windows and Linux, hard drives must be defragmented using the option to move all data to the beginning of the drive so the drive can be partitioned properly (or they should bring in a machine with an available empty hard drive, have already partitioned etc). Machines need to be defragmented before arriving at the Install Fest.

If you still need the flyer that Deborah created grab it from http://www.flaglug.org/Linux_InstallFest2005.pdf
