Patrick's Rants

Religion and Politics

This is going to be a short, albeit, controversial post. If you have delicate sensibilities, like Donald Trump or believe in an invisible man in the sky you might want to stop reading now.

On Tuesday Donald Trump, and his hair, announced they were running for president in front of a packed crowd of enthusiastic paid extras supporters. In his speech, he blamed Mexico for “sending people that have lots of problems and they’re bringing those problems. They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime. They’re rapists…”

A day later, a young white man enters a black church in South Carolina during bible study, asks for the pastor and sits for nearly an hour before pulling out his gun and killing nine people only stopping to reload. One witness quoted him a saying “You rape our women and you’re taking over our country — and you have to go.”

Trump has many documented xenophopic attacks against Barack Obama, claiming that he was born in Kenya and that he’s not a legitimate president, asking for a “long form” birth certificate (which Trump apparently had trouble producing for himself). Now he is attacking Mexicans as rapists. Two white men, in two days attacking non-whites and using the same language. Coincidence? Maybe. The rich white man attacks with words and gets his moment in the spotlight. The poor, undereducated high school dropout attacks with bullets.

Now, to poke the religious. The woman who spotted Dylann Roof gives all her credit to god for making her watch the news, to run late to work and to decide to get back on the freeway to try to catch up to him. She is credited with alerting police, she gives all her credit to god. If god is so great how did he not prevent this from happening in the first place? Witnesses say that Roof almost backed out of his deranged act because everyone in the church was so nice and so welcoming. The answer, from believers, will be that god works in mysterious ways. The truth, as I see it, is more proof that there is no god.

This is What I Meant

Filed under: Politics — site admin @ 7:05 pm

On election night, 2004 I said that a woman’s right to choose, that the balance of the Supreme Court hung on the results of the election. This rabidly conservative Supreme court has voted to give corporations the first amendment right of free speech and opening the door to unlimited “dark” campaign money in the Citizen’s United ruling. Now the court has ruled that small, “closely held” corporations have the right to freedom of religion, again under the first amendment. Except the ruling ignores that fact that – despite what Mitt says – corporations are not people. They are an artifice created to shelter the owners from direct liability. It also ignores the carefully crafted “closely held corporation” has been estimated to apply to 90% of all businesses in the US and affects some 51% of all US citizens – well, 25.5% if you discount the (old white) men. And it ignores the fact that Koch industries, run by two extremely wealthy old white guys might be considered a “small, closely held corporation”. Do we really believe that billion dollar businesses are “small”?

Will we next be hearing that women can be discriminated in these same businesses if women are to be considered chattel according to the religions of these same corporations? After all freedom of religion is the first amendment, well before that pesky one that gives women the right to vote, and the one that requires all peoples to be treated equally.

I wrote in 2004,

The makeup of the Supreme Court hangs in the balance tonight.

The pendulum has swung. We are reaping what Bush has sown. While there are some tides that will likely never again turn, the legalization of same sex marriage and medicinal and even recreational use of marijuana, the relentless onslaught of old white men on reproductive rights marches on.

Can You Really Plead the Fifth to a Subpoena?

Filed under: Politics — site admin @ 6:57 pm

So… Bridget Kelly is claiming the fourth and fifth amendments to the US Constitution in order to not produce documents and emails being subpoenaed by the legislative committee looking into the so-called “bridge gate” scandal over there in New Jersey. I was confused about the fifth amendment claim since she is not actually testifying, my armchair legal analysis doesn’t seem to allow for refusal to turn over documents – documents most likely covered under Freedom of Information Act and open government laws. An attempt to go to a judge to quash the subpoena, perhaps, but refusal to produce evidence? She is not the first to do so and she seems to have a very knowledgeable attorney working for her and the fear seems to be if she speaks before the state legislature a possible protection from criminal prosecution may fail.

When I first heard about this story, I figured it would wisp away like smoke from a failing spark. The story seems to continue to evolve and it might turn out something real – and criminal – is afoot. It feels a little like piling on for Chris Christie, but this is how these things tend to work themselves out. Once there is a public accuser, others feel emboldened to speak out. I could be wrong, but it looks a lot like the GOP will have to look for a new 2016 nominee.

When Does Exclusively Mean Regularly?

Filed under: Politics — site admin @ 8:52 pm

Apparently, when the IRS says so. This is an old story, but only coming to light now. When I first heard the news reports of the IRS closely examining the applications for political groups for non-profit status I was upset with the IRS. No group should be singled out for extra scrutiny. But then Lawrence O’Donnell started what he called “harping” on the original statute. O’Donnell has a few program watchers, apparently, and the senate hearings are full of mentions of his show when they ask about exclusively vs primarily. He claims the real scandal is that the IRS changed the meaning of the word “exclusively” to mean “primarily”. This led to the Citizens United ruling by the Supreme Court, which more or less equated money with speech. (So the less money you have, the less speech you are entitled to)

And the statute clearly is written exclusively. I hadn’t had a need to look before – 501 C (4) scroll down a bit to get to the exact reference.

When you read that, I hope you question which is worse? That the IRS scrutinized obvious political organizations (and right wing more than left – explosion of dark money, anyone?) or that the obvious political organizations were ultimately approved as non-profit? As one of O’Donnell’s guests points out, “as taxpayers, we all subsidize these groups.”

Dishonorable Renzi Opening Arguments

Filed under: Politics — site admin @ 9:27 pm

There is a lot of “news” out there today, the most interesting (to me at least) is that opening arguments have been made in the Renzi corruption case.

The carpet bagger, Renzi might actually get what he deserves. I’m glad he’s not still pretending to represent me.

Subject: Bibiical Misinterpretation

Misinterpretation For those who haven’t heard, Washington State just passed both laws – gay marriage and legalized marijuana.

The fact that gay marriage and marijuana were legalized on the same day makes perfect biblical sense because Leviticus 20:13 says “If a man lies with another man they should be stoned.” I just hadn’t interpreted it correctly before!

I’m not sure where my King James version is so I looked this up. According to Bible Gateway, the passage actually reads, “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.” The site also lists several different versions, but only in the comments – you know the section from this century – does it say anything about stoning.

If you are going to quote the bible to support your point of view you should at least do it right.

Pat Barber is a Screaming Idiot

Filed under: Politics — site admin @ 10:10 pm

I have gotten pretty tired of the racist anti-Obama rants that this (in my so very humble opinion) flaming idiot keeps sending to my inbox. The email is addressed to another presumed racist, listed as the vice-president of RWC Inc and whose email address is at rwcinc.COM not .NET.

Now, I could be totally wrong about, LYLE J. BINIECKI, Vice President Phone: 989-671-6905 E-mail:, in fact there is nothing to indicate that Lylye J. Biniecki is, in fact, a racist. My only evidence is the email keeps hitting my inbox. I scrolled through my email this evening, sure that Pat Barber is racist idiot and found an email that I will post below. Pat – and I’m not sure if Pat is a man or woman, only that Pat Barber is a racist revisionist right wing wacko… in my personal opinion. Well, the wacko is the only part that I’m not completely sure of. Right wing, yes. Racist, apparently. Revisionist, absolutely. The email below talks about Lee Iacocca’s book, Where Have All The Leaders Gone? and it states, “Iacocca speaks up about Obama”. A MUST READ!!! & he is a democrat..”
First. First… first. I read this book. I own it. I could not believe what I read in my inbox, so I turned around and less than three feet from my keyboard I found Iacocca’s book on the shelf. Yes, some of the language has been left intact. But guess what? If you had just read this intellectually dishonest email you would have believed that the man who ran Chrysler, brought it back from the brink and only took $1.00 as his annual salary thinks that Obama is a Socialist. In fact, the email is an outright lie and rewrites Iacocca’s words. Words he could not have written in 2007, the copyright date for the book. He was talking about that imbecile George (whom I have developed a minor amount of respect for in his last year of presidency and beyond – his ability the shut the f*ck up and disappear has impressed me) when he wrote this book. I will now, un-rewrite the racist bile that hit my inbox:

Am I the only guy in this country who’s fed up with what’s happening? Where the hell is our outrage with this so called president?

Sorry. I was trying to wait until there was something for me to interject. But here it is. Right on page three. The racists can’t get past the second sentence before rewriting Lee’s words. The actual sentence, reading from the book ends at the word “outrage”. It looks like this:

Am I the only guy in this country who’s fed up with what’s happening? Where the hell is our outrage?

Note that the grammar is incorrect, it would have read “so-called” and tell me again, who was president in 2007 when the book was written? Oh, yeah. Adding words doesn’t help your racist case…

We should be screaming bloody murder!

My copy of the book has a period, not exclamation point – maybe I nitpick.

We’ve got a gang of tax cheating clueless leftists trying to steer our ship of state right over a cliff,

Um… looks like Lee wrote

gang of clueless bozos

intellectual dishonesty?

we’ve got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can’t even run a ridiculous cash-for-clunkers program without losing $26 billion of the taxpayers’ money, much less build a hybrid car.

For real. Enron. Arther Anderson. Read, Enron: The Smartest Guys in The Room. But let me direct you to the actual words,

…we can’t even clean up after a hurricane much less build a hybrid car.

And he means Katrina.

But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, ‘trust me the economy is getting better…’ Better? You’ve got to be kidding. This is America , not the damned,

Man, what a great quote… except the liars changed it from

when the politicians say, “Stay the course.” Stay the course? You’ve got to be kidding. This is America , not the damned, ‘Titanic’.

See how much better that analogy is in context?

I’ll give you a sound bite: ‘Throw all the Democrats out along with Obama!’

Is anyone counting? Did the racists make it through a single sentence without co-opting it? It really reads

Throw the bums out!

Nothing about Obama or democrats, but I can see how what Lee wrote doesn’t back up the racist mantra.

You might think I’m getting senile, that I’ve gone off my rocker, and maybe I have. But someone has to speak up. I hardly recognize this country anymore… The most famous business leaders are not the innovators but the guys in handcuffs…

Whups! You missed something there after that first ellipsis. I’ll add it back

The President of the United States is given free pass to ignore the Constitution, tap our phones, and lead us to war on a pack of lies. Congress responds to record deficits by passing a huge tax cut for the wealthy (thanks, but I don’t need it).

While we’re fiddling in Afghanistan,

Iran is completing their nuclear bombs and missiles and

Strike that whole section

the Middle East is burning

and nobody seems to know what to do. And the liberal press is waving ‘pom-poms’ instead of asking hard questions.

It’s just “the press”, as in,

And the press is waving ‘pom-poms’ instead of asking hard questions.

Written in 2007, remember?

That’s not the promise of the ‘ America ‘ my parents and yours traveled across the ocean for… I’ve had enough. How about you?

And why the ellipsis after “for”? Nothing was removed there. Dramatic effect. I use it for that sometimes.

I’ll go a step further. You can’t call yourself a patriot if you’re not outraged. This is a fight I’m ready and willing to have. The Biggest ‘C’ is Crisis! (Iacocca elaborates on nine C’s of leadership, with crisis being the first.)

Ahem. His first, was in fact, curiosity, on page 6. Crisis is important, but he writes it last on page 11. Half point to the racists, Iaccoca calls it the Biggest C – but it is not the first.

Leaders are made, not born. Leadership is forged in times of crisis. It’s easy to sit there with thumb up your butt

feet up on the desk

and talk theory. Or send someone else’s kids off to war when you’ve never seen a battlefield yourself. It’s another thing to lead when your world comes tumbling down. On September 11, 2001, we needed a strong leader more than any other time in our history. We needed a steady hand to guide us out of the ashes.

The email drops several sentences about how baffled Bush was while reading my pet goat, how Bush went into hiding and eventually led us into war with Iraq. None of this is helps to stir the racist bile, so it is conveniently dropped.

A hell of a mess, so here’s where we stand. We’re immersed in a bloody war now with no plan for winning and no plan for leaving.

Lee meant Iraq – 2007 copyright

But our soldiers are dying daily.

Hmm… I didn’t read this in the book.

We’re running the biggest deficit in the history of the world,

Country. The word you wanted was country

and it’s getting worse every day!

must have been added for effect.

We’ve lost the manufacturing edge to Asia , while our once-great companies are getting slaughtered by health care costs. Gas prices are going
to skyrocket again, and nobody in power has a lucid plan to open drilling to solve the problem. This country has the largest oil
reserves in the WORLD, and we cannot drill for it because the politicians have been bought by the flea-hugging environmentalists.

To nitpick again, he says we’re losing to Asia, not lost, gas prices are skyrocketing not skyrocketed and finishes with

nobody in power has a coherent energy policy.

schools are in a complete disaster because of the teachers union.

Looks more like,

schools are in trouble

Our borders are like sieves and they want to give all illegals amnesty and free healthcare.

Is more like,

Our borders are like sieves.

The middle class is being squeezed to death every day.

The middle class is being squeezed every which way.

These are times that cry out for leadership. But when you look around, you’ve got to ask: ‘Where have all the leaders gone?’ Where are the curious, creative communicators? Where are the people of character, courage, conviction, omnipotence, and common sense? I may be a sucker for alliteration, but I think you get the point. Name me a leader who has a better idea for homeland security than making us take off our shoes in airports and throw away our shampoo? We’ve spent billions of dollars building a huge new bureaucracy, and all we know how to do is react to things that have already happened. Everyone’s hunkering down, fingers crossed, hoping the government will make it better for them.

Man, this email was on a roll. I thought I could just quote to the end. Just after, “react to thing that have already happened is the beginning of a new paragraph.

Name me one leader who has emerged from the crisis of Hurricane Katrina…

the email drops two or three sentences.

Now, that’s just
crazy… Deal with life.

Erm, it’s

Now, that’s just crazy. Storms happen. Deal with it. Make a plan. Figure out what you’re going to do the next time.

Name me an industry leader who is thinking creatively about how we can restore our competitive edge in manufacturing. Who would have believed that there could ever be a time when ‘The Big Three’ referred to Japanese car companies? How did this happen, and more important, look what Obama did about it!

How did this happen – and more important, what are we going to do about it?

Name me a government leader who can articulate a plan for paying down the debit, or solving the energy crisis, or managing the health care problem. The silence is deafening. But these are the crises that are eating away at our country and milking the middle class dry. I have news for the Chicago gangsters in

I have news for the gang in

We didn’t elect you to turn this country into a losing European Socialist state. What is everybody so afraid of? That some bonehead on NBC or CNN news will call them a name? Give me a break. Why don’t you guys show some spine for a change?

We didn’t elect you to sit on your asses and do nothing and remain silent while our democracy is being hijacked and our greatness is being replaced with mediocrity. What is everybody so afraid of? That some bobblehead on Fox News will call them a name? Give me a break. Why don’t you guys show some spine for a change?

It goes on like this a bit more. I’m tired. Time for bed. Time to stand up to these racist forwarding their emails to the friends at RWC Inc at that other domain…. with the .com extension. This email was forwarded to me by Pat Barber, obvious racist, mental midget. Just look at the copyright date on the book. It’s revisionist history at best but more likely just plain, bald racism.
